in fact looking at the spirals, they represent electrons knocked out of atoms in the bubble chamber liquid and, because of their charge, the magnetic field curves their trajectory. Using Fleming's left hand rule you know the beam comes from the bottom, the electrons are anticlockwise hence the magnetic field is coming out. Electrons spiral because accelerated charges give off electromagnetic radiation. The lighter the particles the more they radiate. |
