Chateau de Chillon was built to guard the area between the lake and the mountains and to collect taxes on the merchandise that passed that way. It was the residence of the Counts of Savoy throughout the Middle Ages and was erected in the 13th century on Roman foundations. Originally a fortress, the Castle of Chillon underwent numerous transformations.. Many prominent figures in history stayed there including emperors, popes and princes.
