logo   CRYSTAL CLEAR COLLABORATION AT CERN  logo

The Chrystal Clear collaboration was set up in 1990 and registered at CERN by the DRDC (Detector  Research&Development Committee) as RD-18. The aim was to study the possible use of heavy scintillating materials in experiments at the new proton – proton collider LHC. This project was quite successful and the CMS experiment is now building a large electromagnetic calorimeter using PbWO4 scintillator chrystals. Meanwhile a better understanding of fundamental mechanisms of scintillation allowed the collaboration  to developed new vary dense and fast scintillators having a great potential for applications in medical imaging devices like PET.

Attention is paid to the development of a new scintillating materials and a new detector technology for PET, because this is close to the expertise acquired in high energy physics, and because of the growing interest for PET in the medical world. The new technology will be based on the use of scintillating  materials and new photo detectors, which together allow the development of much better detector elements. Regarding the new scintillators, we are concentarating our attention to LuAP:Ce. This material has very promising properties.
