THE WORLD OF TECHNOLOGICAL SPINOFFS AT CERN
CERN contributes often practical benefits later in addition to its main
activities: playing and learning more about Universe. Accordingly, the research
carried out in CERN is useful for the mankind more or less directly,
promoting business and general welfare.
CERN plays an important role in advanced technical development. A skeptical
member of the British government asked Michael Faraday once what was the
use of his work on electricity. His reply showed great foresight: “One day,
Sir, “ he said , “you may tax it.” Many researchers and developers at CERN
may say as well today.
But it takes often a lot of time, even 10 – 15 years, to get a spinoff a
commercial product. Industry and society are not ready to adopt new spinoffs
very rapidly. It is often due to short operation range of business world
and inadequate infrastructure of societies. Technology transfer activities
develop technology transfer interface (or bridge) between companies and society
and research institutes like CERN.
