I teach physics, maths and computer science at Pyhjoki High School,
a countryside school in northern part of Finland. The school has about 110 students (ages
15-19) and 10 teachers. The students are encouraged to independent studying, participating
in different projects and using modern equipment like computers,
internet video conferences etc. The modern methods have a positive affect in the
atmosphere of the school and the relationships between teachers and students. A
passive "information receiver" is developed into an active student who is
willing to search for information in different sources. Second year students organize
every autumn a trade fair with a fashion show as part of their studies. With this money
the students make a camp school to some European country in the spring. The students have
travelled to many different countries, England and Austria for example. Last years the
students have headed to Italy and Netherlands where they have co-operating schools. Next
spring 2.4. - 6.4.2001 we will make a camp school to CERN to study part of the
course of Modern Physics there. |
