I am Andras Lutter from Hungary, 33 years old. It is my first time to
take
part in CERN's HST programme. I live in Dunakeszi (a town near Budapest).
I teach mathematics, physics and informatics at a secondary school, I
meet students from the age of 10 to 18. I am also the system supervisor
of the school's computer network.
My homepage is www.dkrmg.sulinet.hu/~lutter with only some work on computer
science, my school's is www.dkrmg.sulinet.hu.
CURRICULUM VITAE:
--------------
Date of birth: 14th January 1970
Education:
1988-1994: university student at University Eötvös Loránd,
Faculty of
Natural Sciences, majoring in Mathematics, Physics and Informatics
1993: 6-month TEMPUS scholarship at the Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen,
the Netherlands
(Mathematics)
1994: 5-month TEMPUS scholarship at the Universiteit Gent, Belgium
(seminars in Quantum
Electrodynamics)
1994: thesis: Graphic Quantum Mechanics (The Visualization of Basic
Phenomena in Quantum
Mechanics by Means of a PC)
1994: a degree in Education; qualification: secondary school teacher of
Mathematics, Physics and Informatics
1988: passed the language examination in English language (Intermediate)
1984-1988: secondary school (Táncsics Mihály Grammar School,
Budapest),
special class in
Mathematics, extra lessons in Physics and English
Employment:
1994- : Radnóti Miklós Secondary School, Dunakeszi: teacher
of
Mathematics, Physics and
Informatics, system supervisor
Experience and activities:
The software I developed as part of my thesis was used at the University
for creating animations
about the dynamics of wave functions.
Besides attending lessons on Game Theory, Graph Theory, Coding Theory
and Logic, I also got
acquainted with the Internet in the Netherlands. This helped me develop
the network architecture
of the classrooms in Dunakeszi, where the Internet connection soon became
available too. Our school was one of the first few to have a homepage
and offer e-mail addresses for students and teachers alike.
I organized courses for talented students interested in Computer Science
and many of them had taken part in national competitions with good
results. We also work on computer simulations in
the field of physics and biology.
I am interested not only in Sciences but in Arts as well and I am the
leader of the school's English Language Drama Group.
WHY SHOULD I ATTEND?
--------------
According to the National Curriculum, a high-school teacher rarely meets
the challenge of
teaching particle physics. Teaching modern physics at high school usually
stops at the very basics of quantum theory (photoelectric effect, emission
lines). Even with selected students, we mostly work on exercises on a
classical basis. This seems reasonable, since the final and entrance exam
has priority above "curiosities". On the other hand, this method
shows
physics as a complete, settled science. I disagree with this opinion:
modern physics is one of the most challenging branches of science with
thrilling prospects. In my lessons I try to emphasize this unfinished
nature of physics. However, my knowledge is limited to the outlines of
the
Standard Model. At the time I finished my studies at university (10 years
ago), some of the nowadays facts in high-energy physics were unknown.
That's why I am eager to get first-hand information at CERN, participate
in the scientific life and research (which I completely lack as a
high-school teacher), thus getting the inspiration for teaching physics
with new enthusiasm.
HOW WILL I DISSEMINATE KNOWLEDGE?
--------------
I intend to give a seminar to my Physics teacher colleagues about my
experiences at CERN. During afternoon meetings I am going to give a
presentation about the new issues of particle
physics to my other colleagues and interested students in a "popular
way". Moreover, I will create a Web page on my work at CERN, which
will
be available to all. I will write an essay on this possibility, and try
to publish it in a periodical read by Physics teachers, or electronically.
HOW DID I LEARN ABOUT HST?
--------------
I am a member of the Hungarian teachers' mailing list (TANFORUM),
I found the link there.
