Richard Gearns is a New York State Regents and AP Physics Teacher at
Sachem High School East in Farmingville, New York, United States. In
addition to his teaching resposibilities, Richard coaches the Sachem
Competition Robotics Team.
In addition to his work at Sachem, Richard maintains membership in the MARIACHI Project which is a National Science Foundation funded collaboration of Brookhaven National Laboratory, Stony Brook University, and area high schools investigating cosmic rays through the use of cyberinfrastructure. As a member of the board of directors for the nonprofit Tesla Museum and Science Center at Wardenclyffe, Richard seeks to preserve the last standing laboratory building of Nikola Tesla by advocating for a memorial science center with museum, archive, and research facilities. Richard has recently embarked on an new collaborative initiative involving the MARIACHI Project and the BNL Education Office. This initiative seeks to develop particle physics programs for US students and teachers at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Additionally, Richard continues to develop the website NewtonsCradle.org. This website dedicated to physics teachers provides an avenue for collaboration among science teachers and uses GRID technology to provide secure cyberspace for curriculum materials.
When time allows, Richard enjoys beekeeping and tinkering with his
Lister engine. He also sails competitively on the Long Island Sound.
