Lesson three:Matter and antimatter

Objectives

1. To learn about particles and antiparticles and to critically appraise “scientific” facts
2. To study / understand relationship between mass and energy (E=mc2)
3. To know some applications for elementary particles and anti-matter

Activities:
1. Pupils generate list of things we know and don’t know about anti-matter
2. Pupils to answer Questions (True or False) on antimatter bomb (referring to Dan’s Brown web site & using CERN information resources)

3. Pupils to write a list of what they would need for anti-matter bomb

(If time allows, teacher to inform pupils about bubble chamber and its role in discovery of anti-matter (CERN to make bubble chamber web site applicable for this lesson) OPTIONAL ACTIVITY: pupils to make cloud chamber).

1. Pupils to search for themselves information relevant to medical applications of elementary particles (look for techniques, medical outcomes, etc.)
2. Pupils to give presentation to the classroom

Plenary
Teachers to discuss information on elementary particles using web-based CERN platform (incl. PET, Protontherapy, etc.).
